mercadoWhat a lot of devs think about Legacy Software:
- Messy code
- Lack of tests
- Fear of touching it
- "Old stuff, keep away from me!"
β But I see it differently.
π¨ Working with legacy software taught me valuable lessons that don't always come with new projects.
Legacy code demands care, small changes can have big impacts.
But for those who face it head-on, there's a lot to learn:
- Learning to read code with empathy, understanding old decisions, business context, and technical constraints
- Developing the skill of refactoring responsibly, in small steps, without breaking everything
- Valuing documentation and version control more
- Understanding the real impact of every change on systems that are live and serve thousands of users
- Optimizing slow parts, removing dead code, and delivering direct value to the business
- And gaining something only time and practice can give you: real experience with living systems
Legacy software is scary, but it also teaches.
I'm not romanticizing or glamorizing legacy code.
But that's the reality of a good part of the market, especially when we're talking about systems that already deliver value, generate revenue, and solve real problems every day.
πΈ What's more: professionals who master legacy systems with an eye for improvement, stability, and delivering value are usually well recognized, often with above-average market pay.
